Chemvet Newsletter Volume 52: Spring 2023

Dear Clients,
These days stock prices are the dominant topic of conversation, followed very closely by the high chance of a dry spring / summer period.

It is in uncertain times such as these that we are all tempted to drastically cut expenditure and sell into depressed markets. However, these are exactly the times that investing in preventative stock health and efficient production is super important. This prevents issues such as parasitism, poor stock condition, stock losses and inefficient production, all resulting in massive costs that we can’t afford. Any of these issues can force our hand with regards to untimely selling of secondary livestock which are highly discounted in markets during these times.

Preventative treatments thwarting a large ‘second generation’ tick build up, flystrike, worm outbreaks or lice infestation are the name of the day. The cost of prevention is miniscule compared to the costs of falling foul to any of these issues especially at a time when you can least afford.

Chemvet’s great range of very cost effective products, when used strategically, can ensure that these problems don’t arise.

Natasha and her team have been doing the rounds of feature sheep shows of late and have enjoyed chatting to heaps of clients as well as welcoming new ones. Confirmation of our stand at Beef24 in Rockhampton has just come through so we are looking forward to catching up with our Northern clients at this world class event mid next year.

On a veterinary note, an unusually high number of Victorian clients are reporting signs of quite severe Copper deficiency in their lambs. This is despite several not having seen this before in their flocks and with no change in their fertiliser applications. We are postulating that somehow this is associated with 3 successive wetter than normal years and an unusually high water table leading to adverse Iron-Copper interaction could be involved. The main symptom noticed is a high number of unexplained bone fractures and chalky or weak bone density. Copper supplementation in the ewes around joining time and again prelambing (and maybe the lambs at marking) can act as a preventative.

Kind regards and best wishes for a safe and happy Spring,
Murray

Vetmec LA Long-Acting Injection for Cattle

Vetmec LA (moxidectin 100g/L) is an excellent tool for the treatment and control of northern Cattle Ticks and preventing the occurrence of Tick Fever in your cattle. The spring treatment is the most important treatment of the season. Killing the first generation of ticks that hatch after winter with a long-acting reduces the peak population size in the summer (i.e., kill the first ticks before they get the chance to breed and produce 1000’s more ticks).

  • 5 x MORE ACTIVE TO THE ANIMAL compared with short acting ‘mectin injections
  • Long-acting tick control in spring means more impact on overall
  • Tick numbers
  • Added bonus of extended worm control
  • Treat in any weather!

Sheep News – Blowfly Focus

Vetmec Strikemaster

Fun Fact: The Australian Sheep Blowfly (Lucilia cuprina) starts emerging when the ground temperature reaches 17° C.

Overall, this winter has been a mild one. With spring weather well and truly here, the ground is likely to warm up a little bit earlier than in previous years. The advice is not let the drier conditions lull you into fly relaxation, it’s important to be on the lookout for the green blowflies.

For best, season-long fly control, apply Strikemaster earlier rather than later to prevent overall blowfly populations from becoming overwhelming in the summer.

The next step is trying to minimise the attraction of blowflies. Blowflies are attracted by smells which can come from ‘dermo’, ‘dag’ and wounds. Wounds are difficult to prevent, especially in the case of lamb marking. To avoid the strife of flystruck lamb marking wounds, apply Vetmec Strikemaster at lamb marking for only 26c a lamb. Reducing dags can be achieved by crutching, and staying on top of scour inducing worms using Vetmec Moxiguard and/or Vetmec LV and Vetmec Dual (below).

Spring Sheep Drenching

While summer is shaping up to give us a decent natural parasite cull (hot and dry), getting weaners through the spring in good condition is still going to be top priority. By the time an animal is showing visual signs of worms, they’ve already lost or foregone 3-5kg of bodyweight, which in weaners can really set them back in terms of development.

Almost all worm larvae on pastures are in the first 10cm off the ground. If the sheep are grazing on shorter pastures (<15cm), in contaminated paddocks, it is likely they will be ingesting worm larvae with every mouthful of grass. This provides the perfect storm for reinfection and is an ideal scenario to use Moxiguard Long-Acting Injection to protect young sheep from reinfestation by reducing paddock contamination.

MOXIGUARD + LV + DUAL + MINERAL MIX = ‘SET & FORGET’ SPRING WEANER DRENCH

  • Triple active drench strategy
  • Up to 50 days protection against Black Scour worms and 90 days protection against Barber’s Pole
  • Get the benefits of selenium, copper, cobalt, iodine and zinc!

All three drenches with minerals for just 46c per 20kg weaner!

Stay with Bodyguard Pour-On or try the new oral lice product?

The new fluralaner oral lousicide is revolutionary for lice control, however, may not be the best or most economical way to treat and control lice in your particular flock. Antoinette’s Holiday Adventures

About a month ago, Antoinette was adventuring around Hong Kong. Mountain hikes and picturesque bays were a highlight. While exploring the fishing town Tai O, Antoinette unexpectedly found herself surrounded by cows (pictured), adding a charming twist to her trip. Antoinette got caught up in a lockdown when Typhoon Saola came raging through, rain and winds reaching 220km/hr— very exciting, indeed! Antoinette came back refreshed and very excited to have her cheerful chats with Chemvet customers!
