Chemvet Newsletter Volume 51: Winter 2023

26 Jun, 2023

Dear Clients,

Great news with the launch of our long acting moxidectin injection for cattle – a fantastic product for worm control over the winter/spring period in NSW and the Southern states as well as an extremely useful product up north in the Queensland cattle tick zones. More on this product over the page. Call to talk about Vetmec LA’s possible role in managing Bush Tick and Theileriosis.

Looks like, for all pastoral areas, there is a very good chance we are in for a dry time over the next few months. Right are the BOM predictions for the July – September and October –December periods.

Whilst this may not be a bad thing ‘parasite wise’, providing a bit of a break from 3 years of wetter than normal weather patterns and consequently higher parasite loads than usual, don’t ‘drop the ball’. Ensure you make good use of this drier period. Giving parasites ‘a good hammering’ by keeping up with your regular anti-parasite program is a must. Also stocking rates may have to be adjusted and a bit of thought put into stock trading and market conditions for fat stock.

Thank you to everyone for sending in your great rural life, livestock and dog photos. We had many entries and it was tough for the staff to vote on the best ones! But here they are…

  • Best Snapshot of Rural Life – Leanne Collins ‘Father & son inspecting the crop’ (Bundarra, NSW)
  • Best Livestock Photo – Sophie Hopkins
  • Best Dog Photo – Charlie Batten ‘The team having a swim’ (Buffalo, VIC)

Big congratulations to the winners! The quality of photos we received are so good that we are working out a way to put them out for everyone to see, so keep an eye out on our Facebook and Instagram for more!

As always, stay safe and kind regards,
Murray

QLD, Get Prepared for Spring Cattle Tick Treatments

It’s time to be thinking about which products will be part of your tick control strategy for the 2023 spring/summer season. The best way to get ahead of ticks is to treat with a long acting treatment (any of the products listed below) in late winter-early spring to kill off the first generation of ticks that hatch. If done properly, this prevents them from breeding and reduces the overall tick population.

Note: we want the product to be on the cattle before the ticks hatch so that they are immediately exposed and killed. If treatment is left until ticks are present on cattle, more production losses will be incurred and getting the tick population under control will be more difficult.

Chemvet now has a broad range of products suitable for the treatment and control of the Queensland Cattle Tick, including: Tickmaster Pour-On, Tickmaster Plus Ivermectin Pour-On and Vetmec LA Injection.

See below for a generalised tick control treatment schedule:

TREATMENT #1

PREVENT (August/September)

Treat as ticks are emerging using Tickmaster PO ($1.86/head) or Vetmec LA ($6.60/head).

TREATMENT #2

PROTECT (November – January)

Protect against the peak of the tick population using Tickmaster Plus PO ($3.45/head), or Vetmec LA ($6.60/head), use Vetmec LA if Tickmaster was used in the previous treatment and vice versa.

TREATMENT #3

REDUCE (February/March)

Treat now to reduce the number of ticks that will remain on pastures over winter, using Tickmaster PO, Tickmaster Plus or Vetmec LA.

Pre-Lambing

The pre-lambing drench is the most important drench for a ewe, all year. Using Moxiguard Long-Acting has become quite a popular product for this treatment.

Benefits of using Moxiguard Long-Acting Injection alongside Vetmec LV & Vetmec Dual as a pre-lambing drench, when treated a month before the start of lambing:

  • Prevents the massive rise in worm egg output from ewes immediately after lambing (the postpartum rise)
  • No need to drench ewes or lambs at marking time
  • ‘Mops up’ worm larvae off the pastures, meaning the lambs won’t pick up as many worms when they begin to graze
  • Can be administered alongside annual booster vaccines (only need to run them through the race once)

Best practice tips for using Moxiguard Long-Acting:

  1. Always give a primer drench (Vetmec LV + Dual) given at the same time as injection.
  2. Use 18G x ¼” needles, as it minimises risk of injecting into the muscle (and yourself!)
  3. Regularly check that your injector is administering the correct dose.
  4. Consider an ‘exit’ or ‘tail-cutter’ drench given at weaning time (e.g., drench all ewes and lambs with Vetmec LV & Dual at weaning)

EID Sheep Tags

There’s a lot of chatter surrounding electronic tags for sheep at the moment, with each state currently planning their implementation and rollout strategies for mandatory EID tagging of sheep and goats. We’re still not entirely sure how this will look, but until each state has released their plans, subsidies, etc., we thought it would be helpful to list the different tag options Chemvet can supply –

Tags

It is the season to start thinking about ordering tags for late winter and spring drop calves.
To make this easier, we thought it would be helpful to put all the year colours, some printing options and NLIS tag prices in this newsletter (to keep on the fridge for when you need it!).

Tag year colours

Printed Visual Tags

Instead of writing your visual ID tags by hand, Chemvet can arrange for your tags to come with custom printing. This is available in two different types: Laser Print & PureBlac (Ink). The difference being that the PureBlac print comes out a bit darker/bolder than laser print. If you wish to have PureBlac printing on your tags, we recommend ordering well in advance as the wait times can be lengthy (see table above).

Print options are available for 2PC, 1PC & Feedlot Tags.

Examples of type of information you can get printed on tags.

There are many different layout combinations you can choose from. The three options above are some common ones that demonstrate what’s available in terms of lines of printing on the tags. If you’d like to know more, give us a call on 1800 243 683 or head to the website.
