Chemvet Newsletter Volume 48: Spring 2022

16 Sep, 2022

Dear Clients,

Welcome to our 2022 Spring Newsletter. Against a backdrop of hyperinflation and rapidly increasing prices throughout the Agricultural sector, I hope that you will find several spring promotions that we are offering over the page refreshing.

Many climatologists, including the BOM are telling us to BRACE OR A TRIPLE LA NINA SUMMER – That is, more summer rain over Australia’s north and east for the 3rd year in a row.

Chance of exceeding median rainfall, September – November (BOM)

This, coupled with a wetter than normal spring (See the BOM map, above) means good pastoral conditions with plenty of pasture growth, but unfortunately there is also a downside – Ticks, flies and worms, including liver fluke are going to present a real challenge!

As I have always said, especially in years such as this, PREVENTION! PREVENTION! PREVENTION! is the name of the game.

We must get on the front foot and work hard to prevent the build up of parasites on the pasture and in the animal, rather than wait and treat only when issues become apparent. If we do wait for signs, we have already lost production and will be ‘chasing our tail’ all through the summer and into the next winter.

Preventing parasite issues includes sound management techniques, as well as the strategic use of the right chemical products. For instance, apply a long-acting tick product in the spring to stop the build up of ticks in the summer. This may eliminate heavy summer tick infestation and the need for a summer treatment, or if one is still required, it will be heaps more effective and production loss will be minimal. If you wait until heavy tick infestation becomes apparent, then the pasture will already be loaded with ticks, making control that much harder.

Similarly, use long-acting fly control in your sheep early, because if you wait until flystrike becomes apparent, production loss has already occurred.

Kind regards and happy parasite control,

Murray

Vetmec Strikemaster Spray-On Blowfly Treatment

DID YOU KNOW!

That the sheep blowfly starts to become active once the ground temperature reaches 15 degrees Celcius!

In some areas, this is well and truly the case already. So, if you’re not shearing in summer this year, your next best option for reducing the risk of flystrike is crutching and the use of flystrike prevention chemicals such as Vetmec Strikemaster, which offers up to 24 weeks protection.

Order ahead of time and have it for when you’ll need it, getting on the front foot early is ideal to prevent overall fly populations from becoming unmanageable.

Barber’s Pole Worm

For summer dominant rainfall areas, summer through to late autumn are your peak Barber’s Pole seasons. For winter dominant rainfall areas, late spring and autumn are the high risk periods. This year, with extra rainfall and somewhat milder winter temperatures, Barber’s Pole is likely to pop up a little bit earlier. This season is looking like a doozy!

Below is a table of management suggestions depending on where you live:

Summer Dominant RainfallWinter Dominant Rainfall
– Worm test ewes in September/early October.
– Wean spring lambs onto low-risk pastures.
– Monitor closely throughout the season and use effective drenches.
– Consider long-acting drenches to prevent larval build up on pastures.
– Monitor closely.
– Include a worm test is you with to gauge current worm status.
– Use effective drenches as required.
– Consider long-acting drenches to prevent larval build up on pastures.

Vetmec Moxiguard LA for Sheep has up to 91 days protection against Barber’s Pole worm and this can be a very useful drench for mobs in highly contaminated pastures, or for use on weaners during the warmer, wetter months.

Vetmec LV & Vetmec Dual will both kill Barber’s Pole as well.

As always, if you’ve got any questions about managing worms and other parasites in your own flock, get in touch online or give us a call.

Out & About

August was a busy month for field days this year! With Sheepvention in Hamilton at the start of the month, then the Victorian State Merino Field Day in Marnoo on the 15th and finally, 4 days at AGFEST in Tasmania at the end of the month. A note for all in Tasmania is that AGFEST will be back to 3 days again in May 2023!

Our next gig will be PRIMEX in Casino on November 10th-12th, after quite the postponement, we can’t wait to see everyone up there!
