Dear Clients,
With the threat of La Nina still over our heads, planning for a wet spring and early summer is going to be important. La Nina will be great for pastoral conditions, but parasites will be a challenge in the spring and most likely right through until the end of summer.
Tick, worm and fly control is going to have to be uppermost on all stock managers’ minds. As we know, parasite control is all about prevention rather than treating things when they start to cause a problem. This requires forethought and preparation.
Up north, the start of tick build up is just around the corner to get prepared with some good special deals on Tickmaster and Tickmaster Plus over the page. Your spring preventative or strategic control will determine the extent of tick issues later on in the season.
Flies in sheep will no doubt be a big issue again this year and, in many cases, a long term fly preventative like Strikemaster will be the way to go. Plan ahead and have the product on hand when you need it!
Worm control is all about preparation and strategy. Using the right product at the right time and setting out your grazing plan well in advance is vital to prevent worm build up in pastures and vulnerable stock. Tash and I are always available to discuss your parasite control program.
On another topic, the importance of Biosecurity to the Agricultural, and indeed the Australian, economy has never been higher. Both Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) are right on our doorstep, being only several hundred kilometers to our north. LSD is vector spread, so insects blown into Australia now even post a threat. FMD is spread by food or soil, so one wonders, with the amount of tourism and travel and demonstrably lack of vigour at our ports of entry, how this scourge will be kept out of Australia.
The mind boggles at the effect a single positive case of FMD would have on the economy. It would be utter chaos in the Agricultural sector for at least a number of months and COVID could look like a breeze by comparison. Anyone out there in a politician’s or senior bereaucrat’s ear, please get the message across that serious and further enhanced preventative quarantine measures must be resourced and implemented as soon as possible. We were meant to be prepared for a pandemic and we weren’t, and I fear the same goes for the entry of FMD into Australia!
Kind regards,
Murray

Tick Control Strategy
At this time of year, Tickmaster Pour-On offers great preventative treatment for cattle that are currently tick free. As ticks start emerging and attaching to cattle, Tickmaster will put you on the front foot by keeping tick populations down from the beginning. Note: you get 500 x 500kg doses per 15L drum, so it works out cheaper per head than Tickmaster Plus Ivermectin (only 300 x 500kg doses per 15L)!
Both Tickmaster and Tickmaster Plus have long acting tick control, protecting your cattle for up to 3 months. Other Chemvet products that can be used for treating cattle that already have ticks, or for using as a preventative measure in borderline tick areas, include Vetmec Pour-On and Vetmec Antiparasitic Cattle Injection.

Moxiguard // Spring Pre-Lambing Preparation
Spring pre-lambing preparation should be well under way. Preparation of low worm risk paddocks through hay or crop rotations, or prior grazing with cattle is the best way to make sure you aren’t starting lambing with heavily burdened pastures. A pre-lambing drench of Vetmec LV combined with Vetmec Dual is vital to help the ewes through their drop in immunity just prior to lambing, and for sheep going onto low worm risk paddocks, this may be the only pre-lambing drench you need.
On the other hand, if ewes are going to be lambing in a paddock that has been continuously grazed by sheep, then using a long-acting injection as a pre-lambing drench is a very good insurance policy! The best way to use Moxiguard LA is to give an oral ‘primer’ drench at the same time to prevent resistance and ensure Moxiguard’s effectiveness for the entire protection period!

On the Road
We’ve been fairly busy on the road over the last few months. Murray, Ruth & Tash went to the East Gippsland Field Days in Bairnsdale (VIC) at the start of April. While we nearly got blown away with the wind on Friday, Saturday’s weather was beautiful and it was great to catch up with our Gippsland clients!
At the start of May, Tash made her way up to central QLD for the Taroom Show. She enjoyed every minute of her time up there and has a lot of respect for the community that puts such a great show together. Well done to everybody that brought along their cattle for a record yarding in the Chemvet Prime & Store Cattle Spectacular!
Then for a change of scenery and climate, Murray and Tash went to Tasmania at the start of June for 184th Campbell Town Show – another great rural show with lots of relevant exhibits and competitions!
Geoff of course, is continually on the road and has visited Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales!

We’ve got a few more field days this year, so be sure to keep an eye out for us!

New Face – Josh
Since our last newsletter, we welcomed our newest Chemvet team member – Josh Poulton! Josh is from Riddell’s Creek and is in his 2nd year of the Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne. He and his family have a background in farming, and Josh’s passion is for livestock and livestock health. It has only been a couple of months, but it feels like Josh has been working here for years!
Herd Update!
When Murray started Chemvet, he and Ruth had 3 school aged children living at home. Now, while it is good to have the grandkids over, they are happy they all live with their respective parents. They may need to invest in a larger couch soon!
